Bible excerpts that scare me

In a (possibly) new weekly segment, I give you a quote from the Bible the frightens me.

First I give you not one, but TWO quotes about killing, yes KILLING, any child who is even vaguely disobedient.

"For every one who curseth his father of his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood SHALL BE upon him." Leviticus 20:9

Basically, say something bad about yo momma / yo daddy, you can be killed without further thought.

"And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death." Exodus 21:15

Also along the lines of killing all who hurt, emotionally or physically, their parents.

Be good, kids!

Why is the bible so strict on human life anyway? In my opinion, it should let you live at your own will, not by any harsh-like rules like "If you don't pray to Jesus everyday, you'll go to hell."

I'm sorry, but I honestly don't think Jesus himself would agree with that.

I'm struggling lately with the idea of Jesus as a real person. Historical evidence supports it, of course... but, assuming his existence, he was either crazy or the son of god, sent to deliver us from evil, yadda yadda yadda. Neither is believable.

Maybe, as Mr. Logue believes, he was just a very wise man with a philosophy way above the heads of his peers. I have trouble taking everything he says metaphorically, though... I mean, who uses metaphors to illustrate a metaphor?!

Thoughts?

A prophet who believed he was the son of god?

It makes sense, I guess. It's just hard to get that into my 13-year die-hard Christian brain.
